Dunbar – Fools March EP (Independent)
It’s never been easy for Australian artists to break
out of their home territory. Which is a shame, as there doesn’t seem to be any
shortage of talent, as Jess Dunbar here proves. Downloadable music, and the
various international sites that provide the service, have undoubtedly eased
the problem, and the exportation of physical product, with its associated costs
is, thankfully, a thing of the past. We hope artists like Dunbar can take
advantage.
She’s currently in her third year studying Popular
Music and Performance, and she gigs regularly throughout her home city of
Sydney - solo, as part of a duo and with her band. Her “Fools March” EP is a band
recording, and her folk-pop-rock style is well served by a group of musicians
thoroughly engaged with, and by, the material. File Dunbar alongside artists
like Tori Amos and Feist, and the best songs here: “Tea Party With a Vampire”, with it’s solid rhythm and
intriguing lyrics, the shimmering “Ghost of Time” and quirky, orchestrated title track
deserve your immediate attention, wherever you are.
